Fire Department
General Information
The Clinton Township Fire Department was established on May 2, 1945. The department at the time of
its inception consisted of one station, one fire chief and about 25 volunteers. At this
time, we have a staff of 80 people. We have expanded to four fire stations. There are 77
full time fire fighters and three non fire fighter employees. What started out as a 28
square mile sparsely populated northern suburb of Detroit had since grown to a population
of 93,000. In fact, in 1995, we were the largest growing community in Metropolitan
Detroit.
Our headquarters station houses the administrative offices as well as
the shift commander, ladder/rescue truck company and one engine company. Our south end
station 2 houses one ladder, rescue and engine company. Our east and west stations 1 and 3
have one engine company. Stations 3 also holds our Special Operations Team equipment.
We are currently responding to about 5,000 runs per year. The increase
in runs over the last three years is largely due to our responding to all medical
emergency incidents.
Our administrative staff consists of the fire chief, deputy chief, and
operations chief. The fire chief is responsible for the overall operations of our fire
department. The deputy chief supervises the administration while the operations chief is
in charge of all fire suppression personnel. They have one secretary.
We have one Training Coordinator which is equal to Captain status. He
is responsible for determining what training will be done and sets up the schedule for
when training will be done. He is also in charge of keeping all training records. Another
one of his duties consists of acting as Safety Officer on all fire scenes.
Our Fire Prevention Bureau is comprised of the Fire Marshal, three fire
inspectors and one secretary. Their duties include fire investigations, site plan reviews,
occupancy approval, general inspections and all fire prevention lectures, literature and
tours.
In 1993, with the implementation of our computer aided dispatch system,
a computer systems manager was hired to oversee that system as well as the administrative
network system.
